Stories

Stephen Lytton is an Interior Salish First Nation storyteller. Stephen collaborates with Deirdre Keohane who creates watercolour and acrylic paintings to complement the vivid imagery communicated by Stephen in his stories.

His first story is called “The Voyage of Finn, the Fish-boy”.  This story was co-written with Deirdre who introduced Stephen to the legends of her Irish ancestors, namely, “The Salmon of Knowledge”.  Stephen and Deirdre noticed the parallels between the legends of Ireland and the legends of the Salish Nations.  They referred to the book by James Teit Traditions of the Thompson River Indians of British Columbia and also to the 11th century Irish Book of Invasions.

The story is a combination of mythology from both cultures, but is primarily a story about Stephen’s life living with a disability.

Listen to Stephen read a short excerpt from “The Voyage of Finn, the Fish-boy”.

His second story is based on a legend that was passed on from his mother. The story is about the Shux Shux which means grizzly bear in English.
